Women in the Book of Judges I

Psalter of St. Louis (Latin 10525, f. 48r):Yael welcomes Sisera; Yael serving Sisera; Death of Sisera
This painting depicts three stages in Yael and Sisera’s story:
a. (at the left) Yael invites Sisera to her tent. Sisera stands in front of Yael in warrior uniform with a sword in his hand.
b. (in the middle) Yael pours milk into Sisera’s cup. Sisera lies comfortably on the tent’s ground, now wearing his crown without his helmet.
c. (at the right) Yael places a tent-peg on sleeping Sisera’s temple and waves a large hammer in her other hand in order to strike and kill him.
