German painter, printmaker and draughtsman, generally regarded as the greatest German Renaissance artist. Born in Nuremberg, his vast body of work includes altarpieces and religious works, numerous portraits and self-portraits, and copper engravings. His woodcuts, such as the Apocalypse series (1498), retain a more Gothic flavor than the rest of his work.
Concealing fruit in her left hand, Eve takes another piece from the mouth of the serpent as Adam holds out his hand to take it. The jungle-like Garden is populated by numerous animals.
