Born in Calais, Brown was an English painter of moral and historical subjects. His style is distinctly graphic and he was closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. He was a painstaking slow worker, unwilling to accept compromise of any kind. As a result, his output was small, but it was often of a very high quality, and a number of his pictures were startlingly original.
